Once upon a time Whyalla had an annual sculpture prize.
There was also a time when we didn’t have SBS reception.
But eventually we got it in 1989.
The Whyalla Players put on an annual musical, and have done for a long time. Ocasionally that rates a STAN cartoon such as when they staged FIDDLER ON THE ROOF.
Then the Whyalla Players staged THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS.
The biggest arts issue in Whyalla over the past twenty or so years was the position of the new theatre, which was eventually called THE MIDDLEBACK THEATRE.
There were two sites chosen as possible locations: on Hummock Hill and on Nicolson Avenue next to the existing College Theatre and the TAFE college. Not surprisingly the town seemed to be divided as to the merits of both sites.
For a while it seemed no decision was going to be made.
Finally the Nicolson Avenue site was chosen, although even today there are those who think a theatre planted on top of Hummock Hill would have been more of an impressive structure.
When the Middleback Theatre was opened it was found to have a ‘ghost’.
Meanwhile, the annual Whyalla Art Prize continued to grow in size, with the prize money increasing accordingly.
Are tattoos art? If they are then here are two STAN cartoons on the subject.
Rock music is art however.
Whyalla also seems to have its share of talent quests.
As well as more traditional cultural activities such as ballroom dancing.
And finally, is spaghetti wrestling, as once promoted by one of the hotels, art?
