Whyalla had a tough time of it during the 1970s, although it wasn’t all bad.

The recreation centre was built in the 1970s.

It was also when the first BANKCARD was introduced.

But the BIG issue in the 1970s was the closure of the Whyalla Shipyard.
There was a slogan in town which stated: WE DO MORE THAN BUILD SHIPS

As a result of the closure of the shipyard, the population fell rapidly and all sorts of government help was needed.

It was also the decade when Whyalla acquired THE RUDDER, the statue which stands in Wilson Park and was designed by Mr F. Belgiorno Nettis, managing director of Transfield.

Another issue was the local bus service and the City Council planning to move the Civic Building to the then vacant Bunyarra building on Nicolson Avenue.
