The waters around Whyalla are famous for their fishing, especially the Red Snapper. Each Easter a fishing competition is organized which brings in anglers and their boats from all around Australia, although each year I seem to have some cartoon which takes the side of the much fished fishes.

Other things happen in the gulf too. At one stage it was common to build artificial reefs out of old tyres and such.
The new marina was a source of potential danger when it was first completed.
There was also an issue with mooring fees being lower than those charged at the local caravan parks, although since then the marina fees have been increased.
Odd, back then the spelling SCHNAPPER seemed to be all the go while now it’s usually spelt SNAPPER.
There have been several changes to the fishing competition over time. At one point it was thought a good idea to ‘tag’ certain fish, and a catch and return policy was discussed, as it would be something of a disaster if all the fish were caught.
Of course, the fishing competition can be used to highlight virtually anything going on in Whyalla at the time, such as the annual drop in population from the 1980s to 2000s.
