One problem Whyalla has had for years is how we are perceived elsewhere in Australia. Seems we’re just some ugly industrial city. It was a bit of a shock therefore when in March 2002 a magazine actually wrote a nice article about the place.
2002 was the year when the old TAFE College Theatre was converted for use as a movie theatre by the management of the Middleback Theatre so Whyalla had a real movie house, complete with popcorn.
Many changes were made to the bus routes.
As always, the Cuttlefish remained front and centre.
The drought was already beginning to bite.
The roundabout in question was at the intersection of Elliott Street and Essington Lewis Avenue.
There were ongoing issues down at the Council. Mayor John Smith eventually appeared to abandon the mayoral office at the council chambers and set up a home office at his place of residence. All very odd.
The two statues of Flinders and Freycinet at the lookout were opened and were the subject of some vandalism.
The skate park in Civic Park was designed and built. A competition was also held to find a suitable name. My suggestion of BAND AID ALLEY wasn’t that far off from the eventual choice of RISKIT PARK.
