It seems that one never ending issue in the world of health is BUDGET CUTS.
One big issue in Whyalla in 1991 was the proposed demolition of the old maternity building at the Whyalla Hospital: the McEwin wing. Various plans were put forward for uses for the old building, built in 1943, but in the end, and despite some fierce opposition, it was eventually demolished. Where the building stood is presently only a car park.
At the same time as the demolition of the McEwin building was an issue, the old HMAS WHYALLA was tied up alongside the wharf where its fate was being decided.
The issue of attracting doctors and other medical types to come and live and work in the country was an ongoing issue from the 1990s onwards.
There was also a big push for overseas trained doctors to come to the bush.
Men’s health was also an issue in the 1990s, and the novel idea of getting men to think of their bodies in the same way as they thought about their cars- both needing regular maintenance.
