Whyalla has, since at least the early 1970s, tried to broaden its base from heavy industry and mining to include tourism. After all we’re on the road to Western Australia and have at least a few things tourists like to gawk at.
Until we planted the ship (HMAS WHYALLA.) on the highway, we were always on the lookout for something BIG.
Of course the steelworks itself is a tourist attraction..
The redevelopment of HUMMOCK HILL with lookouts and revamped remnants of the World War Two anti-aircraft emplacements, was a major undertaking.
This cartoon dates back to July 1993.
For a time we did seem to be shifting the tourist office about a bit.
One of Whyalla’s ongoing problems is that every so often some journalist would arrive in town and write a negative story about the place. That gave us something of an image problem.
One such story complained about the natives all going around wearing black tee shirts, which prompted two STAN cartoons..
Of course, if we were to see ourselves as a tourism town rather than a place which only made steel we had to change our thinking.
Another year, and yet another negative story in the national press about Whyalla. This time the writer called us an “Ugly town.” But any publicity is good publicity. Right?
