Often the STAN cartoon has used signs. Maybe that’s because I used to be a sign writer in an earlier life.

This cartoon comments on the struggle back in the late 1970s to find a suitable name for what is now Port Bonython. It seemed to get changed every week.
Whyalla has, over the years, attracted more than its share of names and slogans. One idea was to have people take a siesta, which of course would only work if everybody joined in.
Whyalla has also traded on its 301 days of sunshine every year, which itself was a slogan used back when.
In 2007 Whyalla added yet another slogan with the discovery that the city had a fine collection of Art Deco buildings dating back to the 1930s, not to mention a tourist unfriendly Pellet Plant nearby.
Does anybody remember the drive-in? Whyalla lost its drive-in to a church.
Then we had to tell the tourists not to catch the local cuttlefish.
Then, after much debate in the mid 2000s, it seemed we couldn’t decide exactly what to do about upgrading the foreshore, and so another sign became necessary.
You gotta have a plan.
A 24 hour poll
The Freycinet Trail is a tour through the Point Lowly area (Home of the giant cuttlefish.) and the issue was getting publicity about this tourist attraction out to the wider world..
