The Whyalla foreshore is a popular place to swim and enjoy the beach, but it’s always had something of a reputation for the seaweed. Over the years the STAN cartoon has made many interesting suggestions on how to deal with this particular menace.

There have also been many attempts at ‘doing up’ the foreshore, although one attempt coincided with the establishment of a Free (Read: nudist) beach.
There were also attempts to declare the beach a ‘dry’ zone.
At the heart of the beach is Hummock Hill, originally used by the army during world war two as a gun emplacement (recently refurbished).
One recent plan for the foreshore called for a water park, but it hasn’t happened yet. (Incidentally, in the background to this cartoon is one of the new Cape Ships, recently introduced to take iron ore overseas.)
The big issue with the latest foreshore plan was the idea to run a road right through the foreshore area, linking it with the City Plaza. There was great public outrage at this suggestion.
Another go at the foreshore road. The thinking, by the Adelaide planners, was that by diverting traffic to the foreshore it would become more popular.
The original idea was to bulldoze a road straight through the Ada Ryan Gardens, but public opinion soon killed off that bright idea.
