After a break of about three years in order to concentrate on my children’s books, the manager of the WHYALLA NEWS asked me to again take up pen and ink. At the time, about March 1998, the paper had a new editor: Lisa McIlwaine, who replaced former editor Peter Daniels.

The first of the new cartoons appeared on 6 March 1998 and the issue was the idea for something big for Whyalla to attract the tourists. The strange thing about this cartoon was that I signed it with the full STANLEY in the lower right hand corner, rather than the usual shortened STY I previously used for all the STAN cartoons.
In 1998 the local BUTTERCUP bakery was forced to close. This was before the BOOM, so any job losses in town was serious. The old BUTTERCUP bakery was taken over by the SPOTLIGHT store.
We were also just discovering the cuttlefish, and TV crews from all around the world seemed to be descending on Whyalla to film their antics.
The aquaculture industry was also a novelty.
The Anglican Church was planning a building on what was then the ECO CITY CORE SITE.
Mc Ritchie Crescent primary school closed in 1998.
City Council also wanted to extend its boundaries, perhaps out into the gulf so the fish would need a garbage collection.
The City Plaza in the old eastern end of town versus the Westland shopping centre was an old issue.
Was McDonalds mooted back in 1998?
The start of the internet? One of the first cartoons to use the dreaded HOW STAN SEES IT banners across the top. 15 December 1998.
A strange sporting code called RUGBY came to town.
